FOR parents wondering how to occupy their children during these school holidays, I have a few suggestions on how to use mathematics in fun ways. These activities do not need special tools and they can be done at home, in the garden or a nearby park.

Make patterns with nature: Collect leaves, stones or flowers and use them to make repeating patterns on the ground, like leaf, stone, leaf, stone. Or create symmetrical patterns or shapes. This helps with understanding sequences and basic geometry.
