A mother’s love transcends species


THE heartbreaking scene of a mother elephant trying desperately to save her calf pinned under a lorry on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway left me, like many others, deeply moved.

The tragedy of the situation was compounded by the visible anguish of the mother, who refused to leave her dying young one, pushing the vehicle in panic, and then standing helplessly beside her calf. She reportedly shed tears in despair.
