Navigating pitfalls of an ageing nation

WE have been alerted to the fact – and reminded often of late – that Malaysia is at a critical juncture in its demographic shift towards an ageing population. But what is alarming is that we are actually categorised as a rapidly ageing nation based on the trajectory of future growth of our elderly population.

In 2022 we were an ageing nation with 2.4 million senior citizens aged 65 years and above, comprising 7.6% of the population. This is extrapolated to grow to 14% of the population in 2044, when we will become an aged nation. When senior citizens comprise 20% of the population in 2055, we will be a super-aged nation. That’s not very far away.
