THE Hari Raya holidays gave me a chance to re-read some of my favourite books during my schooldays.
Returning to George Orwell’s 1984 (published in 1949) after all these years, I was struck by how its warnings about truth manipulation and thought control now seem less like distant fiction and more like a playbook for contemporary politics.
