Vital AED initiative must be practical and impactful

IN 2022, then Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced plans to make it compulsory for government buildings and public facilities to install automated external defibrillators (AEDs). (“All public facilities, transport must have AED devices by 2025, says KJ”, The Star, March 25, 2022; online at bit.ly/star_aed).

This important issue was revisited recently in Parliament, reigniting hope for widespread AED implementation in Malaysia. While this is an encouraging development, the move requires careful consideration.
