THE Education Ministry’s assurance that the entry of volunteer English teachers from Singapore will not impact the recruitment and placement of local graduates and teachers is both misleading and short-sighted.
While the stated aim of improving English proficiency in underserved areas is commendable, the underlying assumption that Singaporean teachers possess superior English language skills compared to their Malaysian counterparts is both arrogant and unfounded.
