Time to rethink school assessments

I AM writing to express my deep concern about the current state of primary and secondary school assessments in Malaysia. School-Based Assessment (PBS), while intended to provide a holistic evaluation of students, has unfortunately become a system rife with subjectivity and potential for bias.

A major issue lies in the lack of transparency surrounding PBS grades. The current system, where teachers award marks with minimal oversight, creates an environment susceptible to favouritism. A recent case where a teacher allegedly awarded his/her son an undeservedly high mark in English Language highlights this problem. Instances like these erode public trust in the system and raise questions about true student achievement.
