Separate events for better support for women shuttlers

THE Thomas and Uber Badminton Cups were held in Chengdu, China, recently with China emerging as champions in both the events.

The Thomas Cup was exciting and thrilling, as many countries had an equal chance of winning the trophy. However, holding the Uber Cup – the women’s competition, sometimes called the World Women’s Team Championships – at the same time and in the same venue as the Thomas Cup diminished the importance and excitement of the former. Most people simply ignore the Uber Cup as being of no significance even though women’s badminton is equally exciting and competitive.
