Amended safety and health law takes effect on June 1

THE announcement by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim that the Occupational Safety and Health Amendment Act 2022 (Osha 2022) will come into effect on June 1 this year has been long awaited, “Employees can leave unsafe workplace without repercussions following Osha enforcement, says HR minister” (The Star, April 28).

The original Occupational Safety and Health Act was the primary law governing occupational safety and health in Malaysia since it was implemented on Feb 24, 1994. It ran parallel with the Factory and Machinery Acts 1967 (FMA), which was the occupational safety legislation at that time.
