ON the issue of training medical specialists to fulfil the healthcare needs of the country, I believe it’s imperative to address two issues in a holistic manner.

First, the number of trainers who have received adequate training in the subspecialties should be increased. During a brief stint in India, I observed that two or three trainers were assigned to each trainee in the postgraduate and higher levels.
