Why investigate march organisers?

DESPITE Malaysia being a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the path towards gender equality in this country remains fraught with challenges.

On March 9, one day after International Women’s Day, Malaysian civil society organisations held a march aimed at raising awareness about women’s rights among the public. How-ever, after the march, the police initiated an investigation into the organisers under the Minor Offences Act and the Peaceful Assembly Act, saying that the march had featured some slogans that allegedly touched on sensitive content (“Cops to summon individuals behind Women’s March”, The Star, March 11; online at bit.ly/ 3PeRqgk).
