THE Dec 3 terrorist attack during a Catholic mass at Mindanao State University in Marawi, Philippines, is a cruel reminder of terrorist atrocities in South-East Asia. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis), also known as Daesh, claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed four people.
Analysts say the attack’s motivation may be revenge. While it is not new for terrorists to target places of worship, the Marawi attack was also in a university. It shows that the attackers managed to slip by the security of two institutions, the university and the church. However, these types of places generally do not have tight security and are regarded as easy targets.
