IT is true that interns are not covered by the Employment Act 1955 as they are neither employees nor independent contractors, and their work is for the purpose of training.
Furthermore, there is no law at present stating that an intern has to be paid, so employers are giving them money mostly out of goodwill to cover their expenses such as transport and meals.
