The charges against Lestari Yahya, Aliff Naif and Hasbie Muda undermines the right to peaceful assembly

SUARA Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) is concerned that the police opened an investigation into people who took part in a peaceful protest and, subsequently, laid charges against Amanah youth chief Hasbie Muda, International Islamic University Malaysia Student Union president Aliff Naif and PKR youth chief for Batu, Lestari Yahya.

The charges under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 pertain to a protest against rising food prices that occurred on July 23, 2022, in Kuala Lumpur – despite the fact that it was a peaceful event monitored by the police. Therefore, these charges are an assault on the right of peaceful assembly as enshrined under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.
