I REFER to the letter “Plight of minority languages” (The Star, May 14; online at by Santhokh Singh Randhawa.

It is sad to read that students are deprived of studying minority languages at secondary schools. Tamil newspapers recently reported on secondary school students facing obstacles in studying Tamil and Tamil Literature. The principal of a school in Kajang, Selangor, directed Form Five students to return Tamil Literature textbooks, saying the school has no “surat punca kuasa” (letter of authorisation) to offer the subject even though the students had studied it in Form Four.
