Vaccination booster shot necessary, Health Ministry should review hasty notification

I urge all citizens and residents in this country to fully cooperate with plans by the Health Ministry to administer the Covid-19 vaccination booster shot.

Do not take this booster shot lightly as with the latest Omicron variant currently raging, more countries have begun announcing border entry restrictions. Thus, it is imperative that the public goes for the booster shot to increase the antibodies and improve one’s immunity and protection against the dreaded infectious disease.

According to a British research report, six months after the last jab, the protective effect against the Covid-19 infection would have weakened. The research report believes that it is necessary to administer the booster jab. Among them, it is very important to strengthen targeting of specific groups, especially among the elderly and persons with comorbidities. If they unfortunately contract the coronavirus, their symptoms would be severe without the booster shot.

Additionally, besides Malaysia, many other countries across the globe also mix vaccines for the booster jab. Hence, there is no need to be doubtful if a different brand for the booster shot has been selected for you. Refrain from being fastidious over the booster brand. Getting inoculated with the booster shot is the correct and safest way. Have trust in the health authorities. For those who have completed their vaccination against Covid-19, a mixture with Pfizer for the booster shot will not harm one’s health. Therefore, individuals who have been injected with Sinovac should be assured that receiving the Pfizer booster shot is safe.

According to Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, 40% to 45% of individuals who received an appointment for the booster shot had missed their appointments. This has caused concerns of the Health Ministry that some people do not comprehend the importance of the booster shot.

However, I have also received public feedback that the notification by the Health Ministry was hasty. As a result, many elderly persons often missed the opportunity to receive the booster shot as they had not checked their mobile phones for a while. Therefore, we appeal to the ministry to issue the booster shot notification at least two weeks in advance to give people sufficient time to make the necessary arrangements, as was practised in the past with the initial administration of the vaccine for the public.
