The 1MDB crisis was a major lynchpin in helping secure the rise of Pakatan Harapan from 2016 - 2018, and the consequent downfall of the Barisan Nasional government.
Immediately after Barisan’s downfall, there was a massive effort to uncover the truth surrounding 1MDB. However, while all these were going on, Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz was appointed as one of the members of the Council of Eminent Persons advising the new Pakatan government. Around that time, she was also given the powerful position of Group Chairman of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).
