Natural rubber cultivation amid climate change

DELEGATES from the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), an initiative under the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, are scheduled to make a presentation on their initiatives on natural rubber at the ongoing COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland.

Concerns, however, have been raised over why the GPSNR’s focus is on natural rubber only. Why is synthetic rubber, a key material used in tyres, not included in the sustainable rubber initiative? After all, synthetic rubber is made from petroleum by-products, so if one wants to talk about GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions, it should also be put under the microscope.
