IN a climate of gloom when it seems that our health, the economy, our political future, even the very social fabric of the nation seem to teeter in a fragile balance, we need iconic images of past glories to reignite the torch of hope and determination that were the hallmarks of a budding, growing Malaysian society.
Perhaps some well-heeled technocrats can fund a national campaign of sorts to remind us all of poignant experiences and moments from our past when Malaysians worked, prayed, played and lived together free of racial barriers and the religious or political discrimination and social dichotomies that robbed this nation of its greatness. To begin with, the country badly needs the spirit of our legendary sporting boys and girls who brought fame, glory and hope into our cities, small towns and kampung. The sporting arena of days gone by can be the iconic, towering fortress of that spirit that is much missed and absent in our nation today.
