Imprisoning people won’t help fight the pandemic

LAWYERS for Liberty are deeply concerned by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin’s announcement of a mass operation by the Immigration Depart-ment against undocumented migrants during the upcoming two-week lockdown.

Utilising the movement control order to target undocumented migrants is puzzling as it does nothing to curb the spread of Covid-19. It is important for the government to ensure the cooperation of the migrant community in lowering infection numbers but a massive crackdown now will only scare migrants into hiding, which will put them and the community at large in danger.
