Rationality in times of crisis

Lockdown no more: The Pudu area in Kuala Lumpur under an enhanced MCO in May. — CHAN TAK KONG/The Star

DESPITE the recent spike in the number of Covid-19 cases, the government has decided not to reimpose most of the restrictions that were put in place when the movement control order (MCO) first began in March. As the owner of a small and medium enterprise (SME), as well as a father and son to an ageing mum, I totally support this decision – for now.

Rolling back the freedoms we have been granted in the recovery MCO phase to stem the rising number of cases may seem like the logical thing to do. But when one looks deeper into this issue, it is not as cut and dried as one would imagine. If the government were to once again ban interstate travel and shutter businesses and schools, the economic fallout would be disastrous.
