Yet another tragic death at a worksite

THE Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) is horrified by news of the Bangladeshi worker who fell to his death into a container filled with boiling oil at a palm oil mill in Melaka (“Contract worker dies after falling into boiler at palm oil mill”, The Star, Sept 13; online at bit.ly/star_contract). According to reports, the foreign worker was installing piping for fire sprinklers on the building’s roof when he suddenly fell.

It was also said that he was not wearing any personal protective equipment (PPE) while carrying out this work. CAP has time and time again stressed that proper safety precautions are necessary when carrying out the sort of work the victim was doing to prevent unnecessary loss of life.
