PTAs can help when schools reopen in June

I REFER to the article “Inspections begin at schools” (The Star, May 24; online at bit.ly/star_inspect). It was reported that the Education Ministry will issue “School Management Post-MCO” (movement control order) guidelines soon. Schools are expected to resume classes after June 9 under the “new normal”. I would like to suggest that Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) offer their voluntary services for the reopening.

A roster can be drawn up for parents who are available to handle things like manning school gates to ensure students are wearing face masks – schools should provide a mask if students don’t have one. Parents can also help record students’ temperatures, with the school making arrangements to send anyone with high temperature to the hospital. The parents could also help to clean and sanitise school premises before the reopening. Taking over these tasks will certainly lighten teachers’ workload, allowing them to focus time and energy on helping students catch up on their studies.
