A CENTURY ago, Germany, the major power on the defeated side in a devastating First World War, found itself sued by the victors for reparations, stripped of its territory and blamed for the suffering which the war had caused.
Schoolchildren will know the story of the peace settlement at Versailles which was conducted without German representation at the negotiating table. It led to Germany’s demilitarisation and exclusion from the international convention that was the League of Nations. It also led to the Second World War.
