Prison Fellowship Malaysia welcomes the move to issue compound notices to MCO (movement control order) offenders as this will alleviate the already increased workload of the police, the courts and the judicial system. We appeal to the authorities for all cases, especially those where offenders have been jailed, to be reviewed retrospectively; at the last report, 378 people had been sent to prison due to this offence (as at April 1), all possible carriers of Covid-19 the prisons can do without.

Prison Fellowship Malaysia shares with several NGOs grave concerns about the situation of the country’s prisons. The 42 prisons have a capacity of 52,000 but are currently holding 73,000 people and growing. This overcrowding situation is untenable and violates one of the pillars of MCO, social distancing.
