The people’s voices must not be silenced

SUARA Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) condemns the actions of the Royal Malaysian Police against peaceful assemblies in the past week and the investigation into activist Fadiah Nadwa Fikri under the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The government of Malaysia does not belong to any ruling elite, nor does it belong to politicians. The government of Malaysia belongs to the people, and the people must be allowed to voice their support, concerns and criticisms in times of crisis. The people are the root of any legitimate government and any attempt to stifle their voice is a betrayal of our democracy.
