THE enactment of the MACC ACT 2009 was a breath of fresh air in the fight against corruption. It was conceived and enacted during the premiership of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, our fifth prime minister. The then anti-graft buster commonly known as the ACA (Anti-Corruption Agency) was replaced by the MACC, which was created in early 2009.
Among the criticisms of the ACA was that of selective prosecution due to possible political influence. The cancer of corruption was gaining significant momentum especially in the power play for key political posts in the then ruling party and measures had to be taken to combat the menace. The PM at that time had acknowledged this.
