Drawn to thoughts of death and mourning

AS the year comes to a close, most people are in a celebratory mood with Christmas around the corner. The great thing about Malaysia is that although we talk a big game about race and religion, we tend to celebrate every festivity with equal vigour. We are, after all, connected to every celebration; we just forget sometimes with all the Internet “fights”.

My family joins in this excitement, but ours is an excitement that is teemed with sadness. We recently lost a very young member of our extended family (my cousin). To understand the gravity of our collective grief, one must first understand that my mother’s family is a big one. She is the youngest of 10 siblings who all lived together, huddled in what people these days call a “papan house”. They were close-knit and very much a part of each other’s lives.
