Safety prescription for patients

AS a pharmacist, I am appalled by the state of medicine and pharmacy portrayed by the letter “Doctors must monitor meds” by Datuk Dr Tan Chee Khuan (The Star, Dec 10).

With due respect to him, I believe he has written the letter with a major misconception. Writing a prescription mandatorily when requested does not mean the patient can demand for the doctor to write a prescription for whatever they want, but rather if the doctor requires drugs to be prescribed to the patient, the patient has the right to ask for a written prescription. This is predicated on the fact that the doctor has the right not to prescribe any medication at all.
