THE Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) will not only be changing business models and employment trends but also the way we live, work and communicate. The revolution that emphasises automation and artificial intelligence will have a direct impact on manpower requirements. Are we ready for this revolution?
The unemployment rate in Malaysia has been hovering at around 3.3%, or 510,000 people, for the past few years. Unfortunately, the youth unemployment rate has hit an alarming rate of 10.9%, which comprises 60% of the total number of unemployed. Graduate unemployment was 9.6%, or 204,000 people, at the end of 2018. The unemployment statistics indicate that we are not on the right track in grooming our young people, especially our graduates, to face IR4.0.
