Pre-paid mobile users deserve a fairer deal

IT is high time the Communications and Multimedia Ministry looks into the plight of pre-paid mobile users. All telcos issue pre-paid cards which are both time-based and balance-based. Regardless of how much balance a pre-paid mobile user has in his card, he needs to top up upon the expiry date of the card. Why is this practice allowed when the poor customer has plenty of balance and this was pre-paid? Why should pre-paid cards have a validity period?

What is the basis for imposing a validity period on pre-paid cards? Why are they time-based as well as balance-based rather than just balance-based? Collecting money up front at the point of issuing or selling a pre-paid card is already a huge advantage to telcos and imposing a validity period ensures the receipt of an additional sum. This is extremely unethical and pre-paid users are literally at their mercy. These users deserve a fair deal.
