Public policies should prioritise public good of the majority

THE letter to the editor titled “Has the government thought this through?” (The Star, Oct 3; online at bit.ly/star_smoke) is misleading in stating that a smoking ban in public areas is a restriction of personal freedom.

Any “right to freedom” stops when such freedom infringes on others’ right to a healthy and safe environment. As such, smoking is not a right. It is a personal choice and people making that choice should respect the rights of others.
