Don’t discriminate against women doctors

WE unequivocally support the proposal for female health staff in the Health Ministry to enjoy full maternity leave as accorded to women working in other sectors. This includes female doctors undergoing clinical specialisation and staff nurses doing post-basic training. (Re: “Women doctors’ maternity rights”, The Star, Sept 2; online at bit.ly/star_rights.)

It’s unfathomable that our health staff, who are expected to ensure the nation’s wellbeing, have to comply with inhumane rules while undergoing training. Two weeks is definitely inadequate for the mother to heal physically, emotionally and psychologically. And the hectic working environment and night calls are obviously hindrances to full recuperation.
