AS the author of a weight-loss book written just for Malaysians, I applaud the sugar tax that is being imposed this week on soft drinks.

I hope that this is only the first step in combating obesity. Malaysians are, after all, the fattest people in South-East Asia and we should be championing weight loss. There is an opportunity to further extend the tax to include food items with a high content of sugar and sugar generally.
