Don’t spare the rod and spoil the child

REFERENCE is made to the recent report titled “Secondary schoolgirl left with red welts on arms and legs after caning” (The Star, June 24; online at bit.ly/star_cane). The article left me bemused by the fact that some parents continue to disrespect teachers when it comes to disciplining their children.

According to the report, the student had insulted her teacher using a derogatory term and was then punished. While it is unfortunate that the student sustained bruises, I wish to emphasise my belief that parents today are overprotective and aren’t like parents of yesteryear.
