I REFER to the report “New VMY 2020 logo to be unveiled this month” (The Star, June 10) on deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik saying during his Hari Raya open house at SMK Pondok Upeh, Balik Pulau that the theme and logo for Visit Malaysia 2020 would be unveiled during the national-level Hari Raya open house at the Royal Museum in Kuala Lumpur on June 22.
He disclosed that the Prime Minister himself chose the winning logo, which symbolises the various attractive ecotourism products in Malaysia, out of 586 entries received from a design competition in March.
The new logo will surely be much better than the makeshift one that was introduced early last year, featuring cartoons of an orang utan in sunglasses hugging a proboscis monkey, a turtle on a beach wearing sunglasses, and a silhouette of the Petronas Twin Towers.
But instead of showing only the winning entry, the work of the other 585 competitors should also be showcased to the public by posting them online.
The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry could call on the Malaysian Association of Hotels and Malaysian Budget Hotel Association to ask their members to issue vouchers offering a free night stay at their hotels as a gift to all the competitors.
All contributors, big or small, should be recognised for their efforts. Likewise, all visitors should be welcomed. Backpackers, if treated well, may return years later as high-spenders or big-time investors.
