Awards should be earned

THE Defence Ministry’s (Mindef) announcement that it will no longer award honorary ranks to politicians and celebrities is most welcome. As a retiree from a regimented and uniformed force, I concur with this move.

Candidates have to undergo strenuous training before they don uniforms with pride. It is an insult to us that such a privilege is accorded to people who do not undergo training. More so, when those with honorary ranks of colonels and brigadier-generals sport long hair.
