Work together on erasing extremism in society

DINA Zaman’s article “An Inconvenient Truth?” (Focus, Sunday Star, March 17; online at bit.ly/star_dina) – in which she writes about how “understanding and contextualising the sentiments of the cross-sectional population of Malaysian youths towards violent extremism” is crucial – is timely indeed, as the attack on innocent people in Christchurch, New Zealand, is a strong example of violent extremism, albeit as a “lone wolf” case.

While it may not be possible to completely eliminate radicalisation, we can try to at least reduce it with more enlightened national policies and thinking. Religious teachings of all hues must focus on the need for mutual respect and tolerance and strive to be on the front foot in culling the teachings of extremist beliefs.
