Why not begin school in December?

ACCORDING to the Education Ministry’s Examination Syndicates website, the proposed 2019 SPM schedule has two phases, from Oct 14 to 17 and from Nov 5 to 27. The exam spreads over one week in Phase 1 and four weeks in Phase 2 with a two-week interval in between.

In essence, the SPM will begin some six weeks (ie, one-and-a-half months) before the long end-of-year holidays begin. As a former school head, I must say I feel uneasy about this. Having the SPM timetable impinging on so much of school term time is simply disruptive, to say the least.
