Emulate Kirkby style of training teachers

I REFER to the report “More time to propose ideas to boost education system” (The Star, Feb 9). I am delighted that the National Education Policy Review Committee has extended the deadline for the public to submit to the government ideas and proposals to improve our education system.

Most of us in the teaching profession, especially senior teachers, know that in the 1950s and early 60s, some specially selected English language teachers were sent to the Malayan Teachers’ Training College in Kirkby, Liverpool, England. These highly-dedicated and trained teachers came back and helped their peers in the profession by training and coaching them, and maintained extremely high standards for the teaching profession.
