Postponing human rights and empowering politics of hate

SUARAM (Suara Rakyat Malaysia) regrets the turn of events that resulted in the postponement of the Human Rights Day celebration organised by Suhakam (Human Rights Commission of Malaysia) and the suggestion that the celebration was a counter-rally against the anti-Icerd (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) rally organised by members of the Opposition.

The celebration of Human Rights Day has been an annual event when human rights groups and Suhakam celebrate the human rights struggle in Malaysia. The celebration is not a rally nor is it a counter-rally. It is regrettable the authorities failed to appreciate the spirit of Human Rights Day and put Suhakam in a position where it had to postpone the annual celebration.
