Centres for seniors would be welcomed

I STRONGLY support consultant psychiatrist Prof Dr Phillip George’s call for setting up daycare centres for senior citizens, “Call to set up more daycare centres for seniors” (The Star, Nov 5).

Such centres are needed to cater to senior citizens who are left alone at home to fend for themselves during the day due to unforeseen circumstances. Their children are not to be blamed for doing so since they have to work to make ends meet for their own families.

Allow the centres to collect a minimal fee for agreeing to look after the seniors during the day. The government should ensure that such centres are set up in areas with proper facilities.

Senior citizens who are left alone tend to develop psychological problems. Depression, illnesses and the risk of facing bodily injuries set in. At the centres, they would be given opportunities to socialise with their cohorts, thus giving them a better quality of life.

Let the centres be professionally managed by qualified caregivers.

We will be very thankful to the government if our request for such centres receive favourable consideration.
