REFERRING to the plan to revive civilian crime patrols in Penang, I feel it would be prudent to carefully study the participation of members of the public in crime prevention measures beforehand. The fact is they are neither trained nor equipped to confront criminals, especially those who are desperate and dangerous.
As the police have always called for the public to be their “eyes and ears”, they should continue with this approach while improving the methods for swift channelling of information. The physical act of patrolling should strictly be left to the police.
