Ban on child marriage must be clear-cut

G25 is pleased to join other civil society groups in commending the Selangor Islamic Religious Council or Majlis Agama Islam Selangor (MAIS) for its progressive initiative to raise the marriageable age for Muslim girls from 16 to 18.

It is heartening to note that this initiative came with the royal blessing of His Highness the Sultan of Selangor. We hope that this indicates a significant reform taking place with the Rulers taking the lead in modernising the administration of Islam to grant Muslim women and girls their fundamental rights of protection under the law, to be accorded justice and fair treatment in marriage and divorce.
