A price to pay for not paying

USJ 3A is a gated and guarded community. The current guidelines allow the residents to put down the boomgate from midnight to 6am only, and a guard must be stationed at the entrance if it is to be closed all day.

I REFER to the report “Higher crime cases without guards” (The Star, Jan 24). It was reported by the Damai Perdana residents association in Cheras that there were five break-ins after its security guard scheme ceased a few weeks ago. The reason cited was lack of funds which was attributed to a drop in the number of paying residents – from 65% to 45% – despite the monthly fee being only RM45.

What could possibly be the reasons for paying residents to pull out of the scheme? Clearly, something needs to be done as the repercussions are too high for the residents who became victims.
