It takes a village to teach a child

THE level of English proficiency among students, “It’s getting badder” (The Star, Jan 21) raises concerns because we want our students to be able to confidently pursue education and work opportunities without being impeded by language.

But the challenge of getting our children to be proficient goes far beyond the four walls of the classroom. It takes a community to raise a child’s English proficiency.
