I HAVE been advocating for taxi drivers, particularly those raising a family, to switch to driving buses and trucks for higher and more stable incomes even before the advent of ride-hailing apps.
Giving them a taxi permit and RM5,000 deposit for a new vehicle would only entice more cabbies to remain in the low-income trap since they would have to service the car loan over the next five years while facing the risks of accidents as well as increased maintenance and fuel costs, and reduced income as more passengers opt for ride-hailing services.
