IT is a common practice every year for the Government and leaders to raise awareness about flying the Jalur Gemilang upon the arrival of the month of August. It is as if the Jalur Gemilang is worthy to be flown only in the month when we celebrate our national day.
Flying the Jalur Gemilang should not be seasonal. We should have it flying all year long from buildings, housing estates, shopping malls and other public places.
The Jalur Gemilang is the national identity of every Malaysian. However, I feel that the pride fellow Malaysians have in our flag is still weak.
This has to change. We must educate our families, children and grandchildren on this from now on.
In the United States, the people fly their flag with pride all over the country without being instructed to do so by their government.
I have personally noticed the pride that Americans have for their flag, and it is deeply embedded in them. Their flag is flown everywhere in their country.
This is not meant to praise the US but only to use it as an example.
This display of pride in the flag is not particular to America as, I am sure, people in many other countries also share the same regard for their flag.
Furthermore, the National Day celebration must not be the sole responsibility of the Federal Government.
It must be celebrated at every level as well, from housing areas to districts, by all Malaysians and not just at government level.
Corporations and the private sector must also participate in the celebration of National Day.
Let us all wave the Jalur Gemilang together as one!
