AS a young Special Branch operative in the early 1970s, I had the opportunity to work alongside our Police Field Force (PFF), the para military combatants of the Royal Malaysia Police force, in South Thailand in our fight against the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM).
Under the General Border Committee agreement, our Special Branch was allowed to operate in South Thailand in the acquisition of intelligence on the activities of the CPM operating in the jungles along the Thai/ Malaysian border. This agreement was unique and the only one of its kind in the world where a home country, Thailand, allowed a foreign friendly force to operate inside their sovereign land. We must thank the government of Thailand for the cooperation rendered to us in our fight against the CPM. The PFF with our armed forces was deeply involved with the Thai Border Patrol Police (BPP) in joint operations against the CPM. Operations Cahaya Bena and Daoyai Musnah 1 and 2 were among the joint operations that were executed then. The PFF was pivotal in our fight against the communists until their surrender in 1989 under the Haadyai Agreement.
