FOR the past two years, motorists driving to the Bandar Tasik Selatan (BTS) LRT Station have been putting up with chaotic traffic during peak hours. Cabbies parked at the side road (between the Petronas fuel station entry/exit and the open car park) while waiting for their turn at the taxistand block the buses heading for the bus stop. The buses in turn block other road users such as those entering/exiting the car park or going towards the station.
Looking at it, one can sense that not much planning or thought was put into the overall design and construction of the new car park building and also the refurbishment of the BTS LRT Station two years ago.
It looks like planning was done without taking into account the future traffic growth especially since this station is an important hub for public transportation.
There is ample space on the side of the road where the taxis are temporarily parked which could be widened to improve the traffic flow.
The restaurant near the LRT station could also be re-located to expand and maximise the utilisation of space at the BTS LRT station.
The LRT station could also do with a pick-up/waiting point for people driving in to pick up their families/friends.
From May 1, the car park operator/management seemed to have changed.
The previous management seemed to be just collecting parking fees and somehow neglected the maintenance and cleanliness of the facilities.
There were expectations that the new management would be better at running and maintaining the car park but instead we learnt that it was planning to open a night bazaar at the top of the building.
I believe two floors would be cordoned off for the night bazaar. There is already a shortage of parking space now, so just imagine what will happen when the bazaar is opened.
I envisage cars being parked on the primary road, and this would futher worsen the traffic congestion at the LRT station.
I hope the relevant authority will do something to solve the traffic problems at BTS LRT station as soon as possible as it is getting worse by the day.
